Why Microneedling with PRP May be Your New Favorite Facial

There are facials, and then there are facial rejuvenation treatments. While a facial can clean pores and exfoliate dead and damaged cells, leaving the skin cleaner and brighter, microneedling stimulates a boost in collagen production that works to rebuild a strong foundation for youthfulness. Microneedling is not dermal rolling, the technique of making tiny puncture wounds in the epidermis using a needle-clad roller (ouch!). The professional treatment that we conduct in our St. Louis office is quick, comfortable, and effective at achieving gorgeous results.
By itself, microneedling is an excellent technique for tissue rejuvenation. Because it stimulates collagen-production, this treatment can reduce pore size, minimize the prominence of lines and wrinkles, and correct photodamage such as dark spots. In our office, patients can choose to enhance the effects of microneedling by adding PRP, platelet-rich plasma, to their procedure. PRP is a blood product. We get it by drawing your blood. The clear PRP product is applied to the skin immediately after microneedling, when the window is open for maximum absorption.
The benefit of adding PRP to microneedling treatments is that this product is filled with growth factors and chemicals that are called into action when the body needs healing. These chemicals significantly boost the regenerative effects of collagen and elastin, leading to the best possible results.
Benefits of Microneedling with PRP include:
- Significant cosmetic correction can be achieved. When microneedling is obtained routinely, the ongoing production of collagen can reduce imperfections including scars and hyperpigmentation.
- Treatment is minimally invasive. Microneedling creates tiny punctures that reach only a few millimeters deep. These punctures close within a very short time but the healing response that is stimulated continues for several months.
- Treatment is much more comfortable than you may think. Microneedling sounds painful. We understand. However, because a vibrating handpiece is used to administer this procedure, patients are often surprised at how comfortable they feel. The application of PRP during the treatment also helps to soothe mild inflammation.
- There is little downtime. After microneedling, slight redness nearly always occurs. The severity of this can vary from one person to another. However, most patients are comfortable resuming normal activities the day after their procedure. By that time, most redness has subsided and, if any remains, it can be disguised with makeup.
